Gran Dolina and Galeria fossil sites, with scaffolding. At Gran Dolina (left), there are eleven sedimentary strata in total, of which seven are of archaeological and palaeoanthropological interest. These include Homo heidelbergensis (450,000 years old) and Homo antecessor (780,000 years old). At Galeria (right), the animal and human fossils date back to between 250,000 and 400,000 years. These are among several fossil sites located in the Sierra de Atapuerca mountains in northern Spain. The extensive discoveries at the Atapuerca sites have led to numerous advancements in the understanding of human evolution. In 2000, Sierra de Atapuerca was made a world heritage site by UNESCO. Photographed in July 2017.
