TheGalena limestone, or lead-bearing rock, occupies a consid-erable area in Northern Illinois and Iowa, and SouthernWisconsin. Its position is between the Hudson rivergroup and the Trenton limestone, and the lead depositsare restricted within that range. The present product ofthe mines is from 12,000 to 15,000 tons per annum, valuedat from $1,500,000 to $2,000,000. Brick.—In the timber regions, the sub-soil consists ofsuch an admixture of clay and sand that it may readilybe burned into brick. It is rarely that the clay requiresany tempering of sand. 24. COST OF misconception exists with regard to the difficultyof procuring building materials. Those who are unaccus-tomed to a prairie region suppose that the settler must hesubjected to great inconvenience unless he has at least aforty-acre tract of woodland connected with his it be borne in mind that the prairies are dotted withgroves, and the streams are fringed with trees ; and thereare few points where fire-wood commands $4 00 per is the greatest and cheapest lumber mart inthe United States. A house of the style and dimensionsof the one represented above—16 by 24 feet, 1J storieshigh, and containing five rooms—can be furnished com-plete and delivered on the cars for $200 ; put up within100 miles of Chicago, plastered, painted once, and ready foroccupancy, for $350. A good board fence of pine lumber,within 100 miles of Chicago, costs about 70 cents per price of fencing at this time at
