The demonstration was organized by Memorial and Soldiers’ Mothers in protest of the First Chechen War (1994-1996). She is holding a poster saying “No War” written in Cyrillic. Memorial and Union of the Committees of Soldiers’ Mothers of Russia (Soldier’s Mothers) are human rights organizations founded in Russia in the late 1980s and expanded during the Glasnost and Perestroika years into the 1990s. Memorial grew to 50 organizations in Russia and in 11 countries including Ukraine, German, Italy, Belgium and France. In 2012 and 2021 both organizations came under pressure from the Russian government when the Russian Foreign Agent Laws were passed declaring them “Foreign Agents” restricting their activities and closing offices. Both organizations have appealed to the European Court of Human Rights.
