Sailing through the Sote Channel, Sweden, 1970. Artist: Torkel Lindeberg

Sailing through the Sote Channel, Sweden, 1970. The Sote Channel (Sotekanalen) was built between 1930 and 1935. Its purpose was to enable shipping to avoid a notoriously stretch of Sweden's west coast exposed to storms. The increase in the size of ships after World War II rendered the channel largely obsolete for commercial purposes and it is today primarily used by leisure craft.
