Spitfire do. Vengeance .... do. Beside the above there are a number of Revenue Cutters, andabout one hundred and seventy-eight Gun-Boats. Two sloops of war have lately been launched on Lake Erie. The vessels names which are in Italicks have been capturedfrom the British since the commencement of the present war. Those marked thus (*) are hired by the United States. The brief remark that two sloops of war have latelybeen launched on Lake Erie reminds us that PerrysVictory was won about two months after the date of thislist, on September ioth, 1813. The vessels referred to areprobably the brigs Lawrence and Niagara. The Essex and the Alert bothappear, — the latter as captured from the enemy. Shewas, in fact, the first British national vessel to be takenin the war, and the Essex, under Porter, was her name Hornet reminds us of the great fight betweenthe Hornet and the Peacock (February 24, 1813), forwhich Lawrence received a medal from Congress. TheUnited States, Decaturs ship, and her prize the Macedonianboth appear in the inventory. The frigate President, whosefight with the Little Belt,
