Plate from Edouard Lartet and Henry Christy \Reliquiae Aquitanicae\" 1865-1875. Williams and Norgate, London, 1875. Carvings on reindeer antler dated to the end of the last ice age, between 10, 000 to 17, 000 years ago (Magdalenian). Found by Edouard Lartet and Henry Christy in the caves of Laugerie Bass in the Dordogne region of France. The caves contained large quantities of portable art which served functional and aesthetic purposes and coincide with the period of cave painting such as that found in Lascaux. The purpose of some of these items is unclear and a purely symbolic role is possible."
