CHICHEN ITZA, Mexico - El Castillo (also known as Temple of Kuklcan) at the ancient Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza, Yucatan, Mexico Chichen Itza, located on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, is a significant archaeological site showcasing the rich history and advanced scientific knowledge of the ancient Mayan civilization. It's most known for the Kukulkan Pyramid, or "El Castillo," a four-sided structure with 91 steps on each side, culminating in a single step at the top to represent the 365 days of the solar year.

Photograph by David Coleman. El Castillo, the most recognizable structure at Chichen Itza, exemplifies the architectural and scientific achievements of the ancient Maya. This step pyramid, dedicated to the feathered serpent deity Kukulcan, stands approximately 30 meters (98 feet) high and features a square base measuring about meters (181 feet) on each side. The pyramid's design is a physical representation of the Mayan calendar, with its 365 steps (91 on each side plus the top platform) corresponding to the days of the solar year. This precision in construction demonstrates the Maya's advanced understanding of astronomy and mathematics. Twice a year, during the spring and autumn equinoxes, a play of light and shadow creates the illusion of a serpent descending the northern staircase, a phenomenon that attracts thousands of visitors. The pyramid's nine terraces, divided by the staircases, represent the nine levels of the Mayan underworld. El Castillo is not just an architectural marvel but also a testament to the spiritual and cosmological beliefs of the Maya, serving as a focal point for religious ceremonies and astronomical observations in its heyday. Its presence at Chichen Itza, a UNESCO World Heritage site, continues to inspire awe and provides valuable insights into the sophistication of Mayan civilization.
