In his fifth year, 175, Heng Hiao Wen-Ti, in order to eradicatethe counterfeit money, brought into circulation pieces of four ichu onlyin weight, with the same former legend and value of Fan-liang, halfan ounce. Henceforth names were adopted for year-periods, and theseyear-names, or Nien-hao ^ §;^ , were used in the dating of any event,sometimes without reference to the title of the living ruler, whose per-sonal name was always sacred, and carefully avoided.
