Barber-surgeons. Satirical artwork depicting barber-surgeons and their patients as monkeys. At bottom, the barber role is being performed, while at top the surgical and medical roles are shown. The profession of barber-surgeon dates from medieval times, when barbers carried out surgery, rather than doctors. It was not until the 18th century that the professions became distinct once more. This artwork, which was originally Italian, was obtained from the German book 'Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin' (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932).
