Garden tiger moth


The garden tiger moth (Arctia caja) is a member of the family Erebidae. This moth is on the wing during July and August. The caterpillars are known as 'woolly bears' and feed on a number of herbaceous plants including nettles. This species is common across much of the palearctic ecozone. Photographed in Somerset, UK, in July.
