Sleep research: electrode connecting wires festoon the head of a sleeping subject in the sleep research unit at the Henri Mondor hospital, Creteil, France. Infrared video cameras in the unit's special bedrooms permit continuous yet discreet surveillance. The electrodes positioned about the head & neck are connected to a polysomnograph, a hybrid instrument of an electrocardiograph (ECG), an electro- encephalograph (EEG) and an electromyograph (EMG). Traces on paper print-out provide data on electrical activity of the heart (from the ECG), brain (from the EEG) and muscle activity in the face and neck.
