The dif-ference in cutting will be noticed at once. A brush that isrun too fast will crystallize the steel wires and they willsoon break off; too heavy pressure of the work will alsodo this, making it necessary to stop and refill the hub withnew wires, which are bought ready for insertion. The packed brush is subject to the same peculiarities, butbeing more evenly distributed, the wires are stiffer and willrun longer under proper usage, although they are moreeasily broken by careless workmen and the hubs are harderto fill. A swing brush will reach into uneven work better. Fig. 27. This has been made possible by the tendency of foundrypractice in producing softer castings. The extent to whichthis has gone was shown in a curious way recently by aninvestigation undertaken by a large manufacturer of sold a number of lathes to England, making what heconsidered a conservative statement of their capacities, based THE POLISHING AND PLATING OF METALS.
