Coloured X-ray of a vagus nerve stimulator (lower centre) implanted in a 30 year old female patient's chest. This is a treatment for epilepsy. Stimulation of the vagus nerve with an electrical current reduces the number and severity of epileptic seizures. The stimulation is induced by holding a magnet (attached to a wristband) over the implant. The mechanism by which this stimulation affects seizures is not fully understood.
