San Pedro de Atacama is a Chilean town and commune in El Loa Province, Antofagasta Region. Popular tourist destination. San Pedro de Atacam grew around an oasis in the Atacama desert. It is located east of Antofagasta, southeast of Calama and the Chuquicamata copper mine, overlooking the Licancabur volcano. It features a significant archeological museum, the R. P. Gustavo Le Paige Archaeological Museum, with a large collection of relics and artifacts from the region. Native ruins nearby now attract increasing numbers of tourists interested in learning about pre-Colombian cultures. Other popular activities include sandboarding and stargazing, with the views of the stars from the Atacama unrivalled across the continent. The town lies at an average altitude of approximately 2,400m (7,900 ft) and visitors often experience mild altitude sickness such as dizziness, lethargy and headaches. The local climate is extremely dry and mild. El Tatio (locally known as Los Géiseres del Tatio) is located within the Andes Mountains of northern Chile at 4,200 meters above mean sea level. It is not the highest-elevation geyser field in the world. Tourists often visit the geysers while touring the nearby Atacama Desert and the village San Pedro de Atacama. Over 80 geysers make it the largest in the southern hemisphere but none erupt very high. Los Flamencos National Reserve is a nature reserve Chaxa Lagoon, within the Salar de Atacama provides habitat for bird species. Among those are Chilean and Andean Flamingos, Andean Avocet, Speckled Teal, Crested Duck, Puna Plover, and Baird's Sandpiper. Valle de la Luna is a part of the Reserva Nacional los Flamencos and was declared a Nature Sanctuary in 1982 for its great natural beauty and strange lunar landscape. It’s one of the most famous attractions of of the Moon (Valle de la Luna) is one of the most visited places in and around San Pedro de Atacama and is located 13 kilometers west of San Pedro in the Cordillera de la Sal,
