All the timbermust be cut from living trees and be free from wanes, black,loose or unsound knots, worm holes, or any kind of decay, aswell as from large knots or wind shakes, which impair thestrength of the timber, and must be sawed true and of full so indicated on the plans, the timber shall be surfaced. Ties and guard rails must bescribed and dapped in place. Tops and ends of stringers and the bearing surfaces of tiesshall be thoroughly painted with a thick coat of pure white leadground in and mixed with pure linseed oil. This paint shallalso be used on both surfaces of the bearing between stringersand caps, caps and posts, posts and sills, sills and piles, or anyother joints which may be indicated on the drawings.
