These vaults are in their essence but a simple quadripartiteLombard rib vault. But an extra transverse arch has beenconstructed through the intersection of the diagonals, and thistransverse arch has been loaded with a perpendicular wall ofmasonry reaching up to the surface of the vault. The second type of sexpartite vault, which was used in theAbbaye-aux-Hommes (111. 129), and which is also found atCreully and Petit-Quevilly, employs precisely the same struc-ture of ribs. But the vault surface is warped to the intermediate Mr. Moore. M. Lefevre-Pontalis. 3 The list is as follows: St. Etienne and Ste. Trinite of Caen; Ouistreham, Creully, St. Ga-briel, Bernieres-sur-Mer, and Petit-Que\-illy (Seine-Inferieure).. III. ;. — St. (Jcorges de IWluTville. As a result, the vault surfaces becomemuch more twisted and complex; the ridges of the lateral cellsdiverge from the central keystone at an irregular angle; and thevault surface intersects the wall, not in a quarter of a semi-circle for each half bay, but in half an ellipsoid, more or lessiriegular in trace, according to the skill of the builders. Of these two types, that of the Abbaye-aux-Dames wouldseem to be the more primitive, both because it is much moresimple to construct, and because it is one step less removedfrom the already known Lombard rib vault on a square , the existing vaults of the Abbaye-aux-Hommes areunquestionably the earliest sexp
