Combe Martin, North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. XPL 5008-468


Combe Martin is a small resort situated in a sheltered valley at the western fringe of the Exmoor National Park. The town is located in some of the most outstanding coastal scenery in the area. Combe Martin offers spectacular views across the bay to the dramatic headlands beyond and a peaceful cove with boats moored in the harbour have changed little over time. Camping and Caravanning Combe Martin is the perfect location for a family holiday, with large expanses of golden sand accessible at low tide and its own sheltered sandy cove. The nearby countryside and coastline has numerous footpaths and bridleways for walking and riding. Combe Martin claims to have the longest main street of any village in the Country the street winds along the valley, or combe, for over two miles. The street features the 17th century castle-like Pack of Cards Inn and the 13th century church of St Peter ad Vincular. The Pack of Cards Inn was built in 1626 by a George Ley of Marwood, to celebrate a large win at cards. The inn has 52 windows - one for each card in the pack, 4 floor - each with 13 doors. The church of St. Peter ad Vincular is approximately a mile inland, with a small stream adjacent to the churchyard wall. The southern door of this red sandstone building has a Sanctuary Ring. The Sanctuary Ring saved criminals who were able to clutch it from arrest and imprisonment - as long as they confessed their crimes and left the country. This practice was abolished by the establishment in the 17th century. If you visit Combe Martin during the Spring Bank Holiday you will witness the traditional ceremony of the 'Hunting of the Earl of Rone' this is a traditional Pagan Hobby Horse procession, proceeded by a chase through the woods in pursuit of the 'Earl', who when caught is placed backwards on a donkey and led in a procession to the beach - where he is dumped into the seat.
