Phonograph inventors. 19th-century illustration of three people credited with the invention of the phonograph and related technology. At left is French printer Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville (1817-1879), who invented a device called the phonautograph and patented it in 1857. At centre is French inventor Charles Cros (1842-1888) who invented a device he called the paleophone in 1877. At right is US inventor Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931), who patented his phonograph invention in 1878. The latter was the most successful of the inventions, and was able to play back recorded sounds. This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891).
