A derelict farmhouse on the eastern outskirts of Grahamstown, South Africa
The Eastern Cape, with its unreliable rainfall and generally poor soil, favours stock farming. This abandoned farmhouse is testimony to the government buying land in close proximity to towns and cities to cater for the migration of workers from rural areas. Informal housing is discouraged to avoid clearance problems when replaced with improved housing.
