When the Nyriragongo volcano erupted on 18th Jan 2002 lava flowed into Goma in Democratic Republic of Congo, destroying one third of the town and killing 45 people. The 3,469-metre Nyiragongo volcano is one of eight scattered along the borders of Rwanda, Congo and Uganda, and is only about 10 kilometres from Goma. This man cycles along a makeshift road that has been made across the cooling lava following the volcanic eruption that devasted about a third of the town of Goma. In the backgroud is all that remains of the town's cathederal.
