The Royal Fortresses (Reales Alcazares) of Seville are a palatial compound. Originally a Moorish Fort of the Almohades, dating from the 12th century. Additions were made in the 16th century. The palace is one of the best preserved examples of Mudejar architecture. The Patio de las Munecas is an intimate courtyard, surrounded by a gallery. The arcade is supported by columns of white, black and pink marble. The walls are decorated with intricate plasterwork. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987.
