GEMS - GNOSTICS Two engraved Gnostic gems, and one probably of Phrygian origin. The two designs at the bottom depict [left] the obverse of a ruby blood stone, about an inch in height, carved with the image of a naked goddess, Itata (?); [right] the reverse of the same stone, depicting the serpent-footed, cock-headed Aion, Abraxas. The top image depicts the Romano-Egyptian Anubis, the equivalent - at least, in this image - of Mercury, who was frequently depicted with the head of a dog or jackal. The figure is carved into a gem of basalt, about an inch high. The letters are perhaps Phrygia
