Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) flowers and leaf growing on a mossy forest floor. This plant is found mostly in damp wooded areas throughout the UK, and has been used in traditional herbal medicine as a tonic and stimulant. During the Middle Ages, the roots were used to remove skin blemishes. Its huge leaves can grow to 100 centimetres across, and historically, people used to wrap butter in them, which is where the plant gets its name from. The male and female flowers form separately. Photographed in the UK.
