Scots pine pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) pollen grains. The pollen grains consist of a base (yellow) with two air-filled, wing-like bladders (pink), which are extensions of the pollen grain's wall. These wings help the wind-dispersed pollen to float on air. Pollen grains are the male gametes (sex cells) of a plant. Magnification: x800 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
