The Garnier Expedition was a French expedition between November 1873 and January 1874 by Lieutenant Francis Garnier, who had been sent by the French authorities to bring back the unruly French trader Jean Dupuis. However, when Garnier arrived in Hanoi, he sided with Dupuis and captured the Hanoi, the capital of the Tonkin region, before going on a lightning campaign to conquer most of the region.
