Teuton Center Held Up. By Sept. 5 the German army in France held afront in the shape of a horseshoe, with Paris at oneend, the Alsace front at the other and Verdun inthe bend. Von Kluck, commanding the extremeGerman right and Von Buelow, on his left, had ad-vanced into France at the rate of 10 miles a daywhile the German center and right had made rela-tively no progress. Von Kluck turned eastward instead of attempt-ing to occupy Paris. Whether he did so becausehis line was becoming too extended and thin in spotsor whether, as the German prophets at the timeloudly proclaimed, it was the intention to surroundthe whole French army or cut it off from its base ofsupplies in Paris, may never be known, but in either.
