Networked supercomputers. Some of the computers of the US National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois. They are (left to right) a Connection Machine C 5, an 8-node Hewlett-Packard RISC cluster (in glass-fronted cabinet), and a Convex C3880. Supercomputers at NCSA and three other sites are part of the National Science Foundation Network (NSFNET) National Machine Room. This allows any US scientist to access supercomputers and visualisat- ion programs simply through a workstation and modem. Various parts of an individual program may be sent to different computers at more than one site depending on the processing requirement.
