Cargo crane, 16th-century artwork. Human-powered crane using angled poles balanced on a central rotating shaft, being used to load and unload cargo from a boat. The operator is pushing a pole (centre) to turn the central shaft and raise and lower the loads. This is figure 36 from a book by the French inventor and mathematician Jacques Besson (circa 1540-1573). The Latin title of the book was 'Theatrum instrumentorum et machinarum' (Theatre of machines and instruments). It was originally published in around 1572. This engraving is from the 1582 edition, published in Lyon by the publisher Barthelemy Vincent.
