African exploration routes, 19th century. Scottish explorer Mungo Park died on the second of his two expeditions (red, 1795-1797; 1805-1806) along the Niger River. French explorer Rene Caillie (purple, 1827-28) travelled across the Sahara via Timbuktu. The British Lander brothers (Richard and John) explored the lower Niger River (pink, 1830). German explorer Heinrich Barth (green, 1850-55) crossed the Sahara and explored Western Africa. British explorers Richard Burton and John Speke (blue, 1857-58) saw Lake Tanganyika, with Speke visiting Lake Victoria (dotted line, 1858). Speke later travelled north up the Nile to Khartoum in Sudan (dashed line, 1860-63).
