Books that chronicle the creation of the world, the Bible especially, did not specify the spot from where earth began. The earth began from a void, claimed the Good Old Book. Even Science was also imprecise, falling back on the Big Bang theory. Neither the Sumerians, a race that kept the secret of the world nor the Greeks and Egyptians of old civilizations have provided this secret of creation. But the people of Ile-Ife claimed to know this fact. Asked them the centre of the earth, they would gladly tell you with pride. Their city is famed and revered as the cradle of life. Ile-Ife, lying at ° N, ° E in Southwest Nigeria, the ancestral home of the Yoruba, is a city with Old World charms and picturesque qualities; it is also an enclave imbued with verve and vigour of the New World, the zing and flavour of the “now society.” As cities and cultures are besieged by modernity, Ile-Ife remains a bulwark against the erosion of customs and traditions of old.
