They landed near the present Harvard Square, and decided that thissituation was admirably suited for their purposes. The land was then purchasedfrom the Mystic Indians for the sum of about fifty dollars and the promise of anannual present of a coat to the squaw sachem as long as she lived. The colonycalled Newetowne was soon established. Although only three miles inland, atthat time it was a frontier settlement, and evidence of this fact still exists in theclumps of willows standing on college land and adjacent parts of Cambridge, whichhave sprouted from the old stockade used for defence against the Indians.
