Culture.—Sow in a hotbed in early spring, or the seed may be sown in shallow boxes and placed in a window when one does not wish to have the trouble of making a hotbed Trans- plant to the open ground when all danger of frost is past, setting the plants 3 or 4 feet apart each way. Some support shouldalways be provided for the vines, to keep the fruit from touching the ground. (See the tomato supports illustrated on page 57 of this cata- logue. ) Fruit may be had several weeks earlier by sowing seed quite early, and transplanting to small pots ; when these are filled with roots, shift to a larger size, and transplant to open ground when the weather is warm and settled, shading from the sun for a day or so. As the roots are not disturbed in taking plants from the pots, the plants suffer no check, but grow right on.
