British WWI aeroplane factory visit. British royal couple (both at centre) King George V (1865-1935) and Queen Mary of Teck (1867-1953) visiting an aeroplane factory around the time of the First World War (1914-1918). During this conflict, aircraft were used on a large scale for the first time, initially for reconnaissance. This was followed by specialised aircraft such as fighters and bombers. Metal replaced wood as the construction material. Tens of thousands of airplanes were manufactured, with thousands of aircrew killed. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
