John Jervis, Earl St Vincent (1735-1823), born at Meaford, Staffordshire. English naval officer who entered the Royal Navy in 1749 and rose to the rank of Admiral. Commander-in-Chief of the British Mediterranean fleet (1796-1799) and created Earl St Vincent for his defeat of the Spanish fleet off Cape St Vincent. First Lord of the Admiralty 1801. Retired 1811.
