DNA vaccine production. Workers packing bottles containing recombinant hepatitis B vaccine. Traditional hepatitis vaccine contains the full virus, which could potentially become active and infect patients. A recombinant vaccine is made by inserting a piece of DNA from the virus into another organism, such as a bacterium. The viral protein is expressed by the genetically modified (GM) bacterium and purified for use as a vaccine. Because the vaccine only contains a viral protein, and not the whole virus, there is no risk of the virus becoming active.
