He obtained hispreliminary education in the public schools, Clark-son Taylors academy, and St. Marys college in hisnative city. In 1867 he entered La Salle college inPhriadelphia, and was graduated, in 1870, with thefirst honors of his class. For ayear thereafter he was tutor ofijatin and mathematics in thesame institution, and in 1871 re-ceived the degree of master ofarts. In January, 1872, he be-gan the study of law with LewisC. Cassidy and Pierce Archerof Philadelphia, and was admit-ted to the bar Dec. 37,1873. Heremained with his preceptors astheir assistant until Jan. 1,1880,when, his own practice requil•in^?his undivided attention, he sev-ered his business connection withthem, and from 1880-84 he wasthe law partner of James GayGordon.
