AIR WASHER AND COOLER FORPASSENGER CARS The cars in the Santa Fe Train de are equipped withan air-washing and air-cooling apparatus which is intended tobe used when passing over hot, dusty portions of the line. Thisdevice, which occupies only a small space, is located in a closetat the ends of the dining, sleeping and buffet cars, and consistsof a sheet iron receptacle partially filled with water around whichis a 3-in. space filled with ice, all enclosed in an insulated metalbox. A small electric motor is suspended in a metal cylinder, open at the top and bottom, which forms the passage for theadmission of air to the fan below. The motor is especiallywound to be operated on the lighting circuit and runs at 1,200revolutions per minute. The fan is 16 in. in diameter and endsin a small conical tube which into the water as isshown in the illustration. The rapid revolution of the fan r^^ -^...315? Air from the outsideis drawn in by the fan through the central portion around themotor and after passing through the cold water spray is de-livered to the car through ducts arranged in the lower number of 8-in. registers in the head lining distribute itthrough the car body. This apparatus has a capacity of washing and cooling 90,000cu. ft. of air per hour, which will greatly add to the comfort ofthe passengers passing through hot dusty regions. The deviceis made by the Duntley Manufacturing Company of Chicago.
