Pitcairn PAA-1 autogyro. Historical image of a Pitcairn PAA-1 autogyro used by NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics - NASA's precursor) for the investigation of an experimental cantilevered three-bladed rotor. An autogyro, also known as a gyrocopter, gyroplane or rotaplane, is a type of rotorcraft that uses an un-powered rotor in autorotation to develop lift, and an engine-powered propeller, similar to that of a fixed-wing aircraft, to provide thrust. The PAA-1 had an aeroplane-like fuselage with two open cockpits in tandem and a tractor-mounted engine in the nose. Photographed on 19th June 1943.
