Drinking water supply, 19th-century artwork. Pumps supplying drinking water to the city of Boston, USA. Called the Chestnut Hill Waterworks, this facility was established in 1887. It was the largest waterworks in New England. The engines installed here could pump tens of millions of gallons of water daily. Massive pumping engines like the one seen here operated until the 1970s, and are now preserved in museums such as the Waterworks Museum, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, USA. Artwork from the 17th volume (first period of 1896) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
