We are able to identify theseseveral families by means of the quotations which occur in thewritings of the Latin Fathers. Thus the quotations of Cyprian,who died in 258, give us a representation of the African text ;the European text is found, in the Latin version of the worksof Irenteus by Rufinus, who died in 397 ; while the Italian textappears conspicuously in Augustine ( 354-4:o0). By thehelp of such evidence as this we can identify the texts which arefound in the various manuscripts of the Old Latin which havecome down to us.
