Girl with growth disorder. Feet of an 11-year-old girl with dyschondrosteosis. Here the condition has caused a large gapping between the big toe and the others, due to unusually wide first metatarsals (toe bones). Dystchondrosteosis is a rare genetic condition, caused by mutations in the SHOX gene found on the X and Y chromosomes. It is characterised by mesomelic dwarfism (shortened forearms and legs) and bowing of the bones. Treatment is by injection of growth hormone such as genotropin, which ceases at puberty. Dyschondrosteosis is also known as Leri-Weill syndrome.
