Oesophageal cancer. Coloured X-ray of a tumour (orange, centre-left) in the oesophagus or gullet (black). The oesophagus is a muscular tube that connects the throat to the stomach. The development of malignant oesophageal tumours (neoplasms) is not fully understood, but smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are thought to play a part. As the cancer develops, it may block the oesophagus, causing pain when food and drink is swallowed. Early detection, followed by the removal of all or part of the oesophagus can prolong life or cure the patient.
