These shell-fishesin turn become part of new beds of limestone, their armor is either ground to powder or theyretain their natural forms and become buriedin the mass as the fossils which record the lifehistory of the past. The dissolved limestone now passing downthe St. Lawrence to become the covering ofshell-fish of to-day v/as the covering of shell-fish which lived many million years ago. Thestory of the sedimentary rocks is, therefore, oneof endless destruction and re-construction. The preserved fossils of animal and plant lifein the rocks speak of a constant developmentfrom lower to higher forms, although somelowly forms met with in the early periods havepersisted to the present.
