It was assured that the Government would ultimately raisethe sum out of the sale of public lands. In the spring of 1843 Congress appropriated the sum of $30,000 whichcaused much rejoicing. The struggle in Congress had been an intense oneowing to the fact that the southern statesmen were hostile to expendituresfor public improvements in the western territory.
