View N of Carlungie Iron Age earth house (souterrain), Angus, Scotland, UK, showing the main L-shaped passage with a workshop in the foreground. The main passage is some 40m long with entrance passages at the N & SE plus a long narrow side passage. The underground paved gallery was built in a trench & roofed at a height of about 2m. The SE entrance slopes down from a paved courtyard at the N. At the E end eight small paved areas may represent small huts or be domestic or industrial working areas within a large timber round house. The semi-subterranean chamber (front) may have been used for stone- and metal-working. Discovered during ploughing in 1949, the site was excavated 1950-51 by Wainwright.
