Thalamus in the brain. Computer artwork of a person's head showing the left hemisphere of the brain inside. The highlighted area (centre) shows the left thalamus. The thalamus is situated on top of the brainstem and is the largest structure of the diencephalon - the part of the brain situated between the midbrain (mesencephalon) and forebrain (telencephalon). It plays an important role in relaying sensation, and motor signals to the cerebral cortex, and is involved in the regulation of consciousness, sleep and alertness.
