1856 - Downieville, California,USA in the days just after the peak of the Californian Gold Rush. Downieville (Northern Mines area) was founded in late 1849 during the California Gold Rush. Originally known as "The Forks" due to its geographical location at the meeting of the Downie and Yuba Rivers. Gold was discovered here by Francis Anderson (a partner of Phil A. Haven) on September 14, 1849. The town takes its name from Major William Downie (1820-1893), the town's founder. Downie was a Scotsman who had led an expedition to find gold. Notoriously Josefa Segovia was lynched in the town
