A late 19th Century illustration from the Book of Genesis concerning the Golden Calf, made by the idolatrous Israelites at Sinai, following their escape from slavery in Egypt. The calf is a symbol borrowed from the custom of the Egyptians, and made from melted down gold jewelry. It was destroyed at the command of Moses.
