VIII. of an identical sliape also occur in the third city: the fragment repre-sented under No. 228, p. 340, is the mouth-piece of a similar vase. No. 988 is a pear-shaped lustrous-black vase, with wing-like verticalprojections, an owls head, and the characteristics of a woman; there is aslight hollow in the vulva. Owl-vases of this shape are the most the same colour and of nearly an identical shape, but much larger, isthe vase No. 989. Of the same colour is also the owl-vase No. 990, which. No. 990. Vase with an owls head, two breasts, and handles in form of wings. (1:4 actual size. Depth, 22 ft.) No. 989. Vase with an owls head, the characteristics of a woman, and two wing-like handles. (1:4 actual size. Depth, 22 ft.) has no vulva. Of still greater interest is the pear-shaped lustrous dark-brown vase No. 991, which has an incised cross on the vulva, no verticalprojections, but two handles. Here the neck is plain, and was evidentlyintended to be crowned with a cover on which the owl-head is modelled,like that which I have put on it, but certainly not this particular one, asit is too narrow. Of an identical shape and colour is the vase No. a very rude fabric is the pear-shaped yellow vase No. 993, on whichthe characteristics of a woman are indicated by shapeless usual wing-like projections, instea
