The venerable old man sat in his study among his favoritepictures, a breathing image of piety arid contentment, awaiting calmly the hourof his dissolution. Without any fixed complaint, his mental faculties unimpaired*his cheerfulness uneclipsed, and with looks serene and benevolent, he expiredllth March, 1820, in the eighty-second year of his age. He was buried be-side Reynolds, Opie, and Barry, in St. Pauls cathedral. WILLIAM HERSCHEL. WILLIAM HERSCHEL, one of the most distinguished astronomers of moderntimes, was born at Hanover, Germany, in 1738. His father, who was a mu-p/cian, brought him up to his own profession, and, at the age of fourteen, hewas placed in the band of the Hanoverian foot-guards. Toward the close ofthe seven years war, when the French armies entered Hanover, young Her-schel resolved to visit England, but not being able to obtain employment in Lon-don, he accepted a situation in the band of the Durham militia. When theregiment came to Doncaster, Mr. Herschel formed an acquaintance with , an eminent composer and organist of that town.
